To escape the wedding crowd, I hopped an early boat to the Island of Sant Erasmo with only one goal: To buy vegetables grown on Sant Erasmo while actually being on Sant Erasmo. Doing so involved a short boat ride from Fondamenta Nove and a long walk in the countryside surround by grasses and birds. The only traffic I encountered was the occasional lizard scurrying across my path. In short, a perfect day-away in Venezia!
Four years since my first try, I finally located the farm stand of Azienda Agricola. Don't judge me! Sant Erasmo is the largest island in the lagoon. There are no street signs. And, the "street" to the farm is actually a footpath along a canal. It may be farm country, but it is definitely still Venezia!
I got more than two kilos of fresh vegetables, thats 4.4 lbs, for less than 7 euros, and had my first taste of the local fruit "Zizoe". (They look like olives and taste like green apples.)
Some may say that I missed all of the excitement in Venezia, but I say it was the perfect Venetian day for me! I am very excited to cook all of this beautiful food. And, with the L'Isola in Rete boat making all stops in the northern lagoon I was able to make a quick call on Burano on the way home.
Where, outside of Venice, can one visit all of these different worlds in just a few hours of one single day?
