Gift Guide Part IV: Eat, Drink & Be Merry!

12/8/2014

Are there now boxes of surprises hidden in your closets and packages for those far away awaiting a run to the post office?  Good job!  Now you can start thinking about your own celebration.  What will you serve to your family and friends at holiday gatherings?  What would you yourself most enjoy?

Wines from the Veneto:

The Veneto is among the top three wine wine-producing regions of Italy and boasts more than 20 DOC wines.  Any wine lover, even those not familiar with the Veneto, is sure to have enjoyed a refreshing glass of Pino Grigio from time to time.  And, we all know that there's no party without the Prosecco.  But did you know that the Veneto also produces exceptionally delicious red wines that make the perfect compliment to a holiday feast?  Venetian Valpolicella comes second only to Chianti in Italian DOC wine production, while Amarone is a famous Venetian DOCG quality wine - usually aged a minimum of 5 years before sale - perfect for enjoying with someone special.

Cheeses From The Veneto:

In addition to its DOC wines, the Veneto also produces eight well known PDO cheeses: Asiago, Casatella Trevigiana, Grana Padano, Montasio, Monte Veronese, Piave, Provolone Valpadana & Taleggio.  But, even more exceptional are the rare artisnal cheeses from the Veneto.  Ubriaco (drunken) cheeses originated in the Veneto.  They are cows milk cheeses aged in wine must - grape skins left from wine production - that carry the flavor of Veneto wines.  Ash-aging of cheese also originated in the Veneto and, though it has become more popular, Sottocenere al Tartufo (Under ash with truffles) from the Veneto is still the most luxurious variety.

Serve it in Style for Years to Come:

Beautiful wine deserves a beautiful glass!  Glasswork is the most historic and revered art of Venice.  Over generations, the glass masters have perfected the art of hand molding molten glass into unique yet sturdy creations - glass wear, sculptures, chandeliers - featuring brilliant colors many of which are also developed on Murano.  You may have heard that this historic art is in peril due to excessive importation and consumption of imitation products.  But the authentic pieces have a grace and grandeur that no mass producer can copy.  For glass wear to enjoy now and that will be appreciated for generations to come, buy real Murano glass.
